The incident

On a routine morning commute, our 27-year-old client was cycling to work when his life changed in an instant. As he approached a junction, the driver of an oncoming vehicle suddenly turned right across his path. Despite braking hard to avoid a collision, our client collided with the nearside passenger door, was thrown over his handlebars, and hit the roof of the car with his chin before landing heavily on the road.

The injuries sustained and impact on his life

The impact was severe. He sustained multiple complex fractures to his lower jaw, lost several bottom teeth, and suffered cuts and bruises across his body. He was rushed to hospital, where he underwent open reduction and internal fixation surgery to repair the mandibular symphyseal fracture. Arch bars were fitted to stabilise the break, and his jaw was wired shut during the healing process. As a result, he experienced significant pain, facial scarring, and asymmetry to his lower lip. Eating became almost impossible, and he was left reliant on others for basic care.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, our client moved in with his parents, who provided round-the-clock support. As he transitioned back to his own home, his girlfriend stepped in to assist with daily tasks. She blended his food and helped him through the emotional and physical recovery. The psychological toll was also significant, the trauma of the collision and sudden lifestyle changes had a real impact on his mental wellbeing, leading to periods of anxiety and reduced confidence.

That’s when he turned to Serious Injury Law for help.

The case

Solicitor Matthew Burke and Paralegal Jasmine Lakes took on his claim, determined to fight for justice on his behalf. With liability admitted early in the case, our legal team were able to swiftly secure vital interim payments. These allowed our client to begin dental work straight away without the financial burden that would otherwise have delayed his treatment.

Throughout the case, Matthew and Jasmine worked meticulously, gathering medical reports, arranging expert evidence, and ensuring every detail of our client’s suffering was accurately documented. They ensured that not only the immediate physical injuries were accounted for, but also the longer-term impact, including future dental needs, facial disfigurement, and reduced quality of life. Their holistic approach ensured no aspect of his pain and loss was overlooked.

The outcome

Thanks to their tireless efforts, we secured a settlement of £55,000 for our client. The compensation covered ongoing dental treatment and recognised the pain, trauma, and disruption caused by the accident. The client also intends to use part of the settlement as a deposit towards his first home, a major step in rebuilding his future.

Reflections

Matthew Burke reflected on the case, saying: “Joe was an absolute pleasure to work with. He remained optimistic and determined throughout, and I was proud to support him through the final stages of his claim. The settlement will help him finish his treatment and move forward with his life, which is exactly what he deserves.”

Joe also shared his experience: “It was a very smooth process. My case changed hands and the branding changed too, but even with those changes, everything was seamless. Matthew and Jasmine kept me updated and were always helpful. I was told it might take up to two years, but it was all done in just over a year. I’m really happy with the result.”
