The incident

This claim involved our client being involved in a collision with another driver. This other driver – the defendant – was speeding at an estimated 75mph in a 20mph zone.

Our client was turning right across a junction when the defendant collided with the side of his vehicle.

This collision caused life-threatening abdominal injuries to our client.

Our client was in a coma in intensive care following the accident, where he was initially given a 50/50 chance of survival.

The aftermath

Our client suffered extensive damage to his spleen, small bowel and colon.

Although the surgery was successful, he required the use of a colostomy bag until January 2022 (when he has this reversed).

However, he suffered blockages and required further emergency surgery to rectify this.

Although he returned to work within 12 months, this was miraculous and didn’t tell the tale of the extent of the damage to his bowel/colon. He now has a significant lifelong risk of further hernias and adhesions, which could require more surgery in the future.

Since the accident, he also has an extremely limited diet due to his inability to handle most foods. Therefore, he requires lifelong vitamin B12 injections to prevent extremely serious consequences.

The claimant’s parents were extremely distraught when they were initially told he would have a 50/50 chance of survival.

After our client’s discharge, they had to help with the personal care of their grown son. However, they felt it brought them closer together.

The case

The case was handled by personal injury solicitor, Michael Higginson.

The claim was mainly formulated on the severity of our client’s injuries and the long-term implications this had, and continues to have, on his health.

The outcome

The client received a settlement of £262,827.07 to compensate for the severe injuries he sustained following the accident.

With his settlement money, the claimant has options to rebuild his life, and savings if he requires further surgery in the future, or is not fortunate in his recovery.

The payment will go a long way towards Ryan being able to buy a house, and he’s also contemplating returning to work in Germany, as this payment would give him the freedom to do so.

“Ryan is one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and it was a great relief to get him the award he deserved.” – Quote from the solicitor on the case.

A quote from the client:

“I had a near-fatal collision with another driver, from which I ended up in a coma in intensive care. I was referred to Serious Injury Law by a relative. My claim was finalised almost 5 years later and was settled out of court.

“My injuries were complex, as I had to have several operations. Michael Higginson was the solicitor who took on my case, and I cannot thank enough him for what he did for me during my claim. He looked after me in all aspects of my case, and also his two assistants; Sophie Robertson and Sarah Hogg, who I’d like to give a special mention to.

“They guided me all the way through. Michael sourced the best specialists to help me with my claim, which made a huge impact towards my final sum. I would just like to thank Michael and his team once again for the time, effort and care they put into my case, which I will be forever grateful for. I would recommend Serious Injury Law in the future as they go above and beyond for you.”
