Increasing costs of car insurance to harm road safety?

Increasing the cost of insurance for young drivers will have a negative effect on road safety, one expert has said, potentially seeing brain and spinal injury rates resulting from car accident rises.

A spokeswoman for the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) noted that the cheapest car insurance quote for a 17-year-old male came in at just over £7,000.

She explained that this would have an effect on road safety as younger drivers are consequently unable to afford to buy newer and safer vehicles.

Furthermore, the rising prices could also affect insurance rates, she said.

"The steadily increasing level of premiums which young drivers are facing is bound to cause an increased temptation to drive uninsured, although we don't have the figures. This is particularly the case for those who already struggling to afford to be on the road."

This follows research from Confused.com which said that young male drivers had insurance premiums which were almost four times more expensive than the average driver.
