Spinal cord injury studies 'must be moved on from lab setting'

Findings from successful spinal injury laboratory trials need to be moved to a clinical setting in order to help patients, one expert has stipulated.

Dr Michael Fehlings, of Toronto Western Hospital in Ontario, noted that with the exception of a few clinical trials, the majority of research has "stalled" at the animal model stage.

A study revealed that there are more than a dozen recently completed, ongoing out recruiting cell therapy clinical trials for spinal cord injury occurring.

It was pointed out that no experimental mode will completely mimic the human condition, and it is an "unrealistic hurdle" for all pre-clinical findings to be validated in animals.

"Scientists from around the world have demonstrated as much as they can in lab models that stem cells have an impact on spinal cord injuries and can be transplanted into patients. Now we need the support and coordination of regulatory bodies to move this science forward," he underlined.
