The percentage of workers suffering from spinal injury caused by sitting at a desk all day is about to increase, research shows.
Sean McDougall, chief executive of BackCare, warned that back pain is happening at younger ages than ever before, meaning that the percentage of the workforce suffering from the condition will increase.
He noted that back pain costs the British economy £12.3 billion per year, with over four million sick days taken due to the condition.
This is in part due to the tendency of people with back pain to take two or three weeks off work at a time
Mr McDougall advised that workers should stand up every half hour for a "little bit of a shake down" and "stretch" before getting back to work.
"You shouldn't be sitting still all day. Any chair that encourages you to sit like that is requiring you to concentrate a large part of your body weight on a small part of your lower back which is not good for you," he said.
