Neural stem cells have been transplanted into a spinal cord injury patient in the first trial of its kind.
The procedure, at Netwark's StemCells Inc, was carried out on Wednesday (September 21st), and marks the first spinal cord injury patient treated with neural stem cells in a Phase I/II trial.
A group of surgeons treated a 23-year-old German man who sustained a spinal cord injury in a traffic accident earlier this year, losing all sensation and mobility from the waist down.
"This terrible injury crossed out almost all my life plans, and has led me to an unexpected path. Participating in this clinical trial not only gives me a sense of hope, but it also helps move this important research forward," he said.
This comes after scientists discovered a new class of spinal cord stem cells that could aid recovery from spinal cord injury, according to a paper published in journal PLoS One.
