The right chair 'helps avoid spinal injury'

Sitting in the right chair at work can help employees to avoid spinal injury which causes back pain, it has been underlined.

Sean McDougall, chief executive of BackCare, said that any type of chair that encourages the worker to sit still all day is "not a good chair".

He explained that the priority should be for staff to stay mobile by walking away from their desks regularly.

"A good solution is a chair which provides proper support to your back and allows you to get up and move around a lot more - so having the ability to swivel is important," said the expert.

He added that other ergonomic factors such as ensuring the table and monitor are at the right height are also important.

This follows a new survey of 2,000 Brits by Pfizer, which revealed that nearly two thirds of people suffer from back pain.
