Double gold medal winning Paralympic cyclist Simon Richardson has emerged from a medically induced coma following a car accident that left him with a spinal injury.
The Welsh rider suffered two spinal fractures, a broken pelvis, breastbone and a detached lung following his collision with a van on the A48 last month.
In a post on his blog earlier this week, sponsor Phil Jones said that Simon had managed to sit on the edge of his hospital bed for a short time while he was put into a body brace.
Jones also posted a message from the 44-year-old to thank fans for their support.
"Thank you to everyone," Richardson explained."I'm shocked at the sheer numbers of people who have been so supportive and just how the cycling community in particular has supported my wife Amanda and sent their messages of support to me.
In 2001, Richardson was involved in a car accident that left him with serious leg and back injuries and no feeling down his left side.
