Surgeon issues warning on diving-related spinal injury

A major Canadian hospital has reported a spike in diving-related spinal injury this year.

St Michael's Hospital in Toronto has treated seven severe spinal injuries resulting from diving this year.

Michael Cusimano, a neurosurgeon at the centre, stated that most of the cases he's seen involved alcohol, and were easily preventable.

"You see young peoples' lives being shattered," he told the Globe and Mail.

"It's the same story: 'I dove into a lake, I was drinking and having fun with my friends'."

He explained that under the influence of alcohol, individuals forget about basic safety issues such as going in feet-first the first time to gage the water depth.

This is not the only summer activity which increases the risk of life-changing injury, with the Bulkley Valley Brain Injury Association telling bclocalnews.com that many outdoor sports could lead to brain injury.
