Spinal cord injury centre opens in US

Spinal cord injury patients in South Carolina could now receive improved treatment for their injuries.

The Center for Spinal Cord Injury was opened on Friday July 15th by Roper Rehabilitation Hospital, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Medical Center, Carolinas Rehabilitation and the SC Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund.

Initially treating ten spinal cord injury patients per month, the centre, located in Roper Hospital, will offer physician assessments, lab work, physical therapy, case management and occupational therapy.

MUSC president Dr Raymond Green explained: "Patients with spinal cord injuries often have a range of health care needs that are difficult for any single health care system to meet.

"By combining the resources of the partners, we are able to better serve the needs of these patients."

In other news, spinal cord injury patients in the UK could benefit from a new electronic system which has been implemented at The National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire.
