A South Tyneside woman that suffered a spinal injury following a pub row is making a slow recovery.
Claire Hilton has moved out of intensive care, but is still recovering from her spinal injuries after an alleged assault.
The 28-year-old also suffered a broken neck and could remain paralysed from the neck down for the rest of her life.
She now needs a ventilator to help her breathe, after undergoing an operation to have a tracheotomy fitted at James Cook University Hospital last week, reports the Sunderland Echo.
Father Paddy Hilton explained: "She has been talking to us, although at times it has been quite hard to understand her."
New technologies are being developed all the time to aid recovery from spinal injury.
Last month, a new gel was developed by researchers at the University of California Davis which plugs leaks in a thin spinal column sheath known as the dura.
