Wearing a motorcycle helmet can help prevent cervical spinal injury in road accidents, according to a new study.
Research from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine analysed data from motorcycle crashes to discover that wearing a helmet reduced the risk of cervical spinal injury by up to 22 per cent.
The study also revealed that cervical spinal injury was the most common, as well as the most severe and fatal of the injuries caused by motorcycle crashes.
Scientists say these results are particularly important as some people believe that wearing a helmet can actually contribute to spinal injury, and for this reason opt not to wear one.
In other news, a study from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California found that giving troops a bigger helmet with extra padding could reduce impact on the skull by 24 per cent, USA today reports.
