Scientists have developed an injectable jab which could be used to treat spinal injury in the form of lower back pain.
Microgel particles were previously proven to transform into a gel able to repair damaged model intervertebral disks, according to the study published in journal Soft Matter.
A team from the University of Manchester have now worked to link the particles together to form a substance which is both durable and injectable, and is able to sustain large changes in shape without breaking.
"Our team has made a breakthrough through innovative materials design that brings the prospect of an injectable gel for treating degeneration of the intervertebral disc a step closer," stated Dr Brian Saunders, lead researcher.
Meanwhile, Zimmer Holdings has developed a spinal injury implant designed to support bone growth and vascularisation.
The implant was designed to treat the cervical spine of those with degenerative disk disease.
