Spinal Cord Injuries Awareness Day on May 20th

Spinal Cord Injury awareness day is to take place on May 20th, with people around the UK fundraising and campaigning in order to raise the profile of the condition in the country.

Leading spinal injury charities Aspire, Back Up, Spinal Research, Spinal Injuries Scotland and the Spinal injuries association have teamed up to help those affected by spinal cord injury and their families, friends and carers.

According to the campaign's website everyeighthours.com, every eight hours someone in the UK becomes spinal cord injured.

Major causes of the condition include road traffic accidents, sporting injuries and falls.

"It only takes a second, but the consequences are permanent for almost all those affected. There currently is no treatment for the condition and people who fully recover from it are incredibly rare," says the site.

This follows brain injury awareness week which took place from May 9th to the 15th.
