Second patient enrolled in spinal cord injury stem cell trial

A second patient has been enrolled in the first US clinical research trial of human embryonic stem cells for spinal cord injury patient.

Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago enrolled their patient in the trial, which is sponsored by Geron Corp.

The spinal cord injury patient received an injection of cells during the weekend and will now receive a progressive course of rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Lead national investigator Richard Fessler said: "We are very excited to announce the second enrolment in this milestone study, which is the first to evaluate the effects of cells derived from embryonic stem cells in subjects with severe spinal cord injuries."

This comes after the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine awarded the pioneering stem cell trial funding of $25 million (£15.3 million).
