Drivers should re-educate themselves on the highway code, one expert has said, which could help avoid traffic accidents that too often lead to brain and spinal cord injury.
Adrian Walsh, director of RoadSafe, has said that people should "keep within the law", adding that "a simple tip is to read the Highway Code again".
"We actually purchase the right to the huge mobility which a car gives us. With that contract comes observance of the law, the car itself, protection of self and others - [that is] insurance and of course taxation," said Mr Walsh.
This follows research from Santander which found that one in ten men who have a driving accident said it happened because they were distracted at the wheel. This is compared to one in twenty women who said that same thing.
Additionally, three in ten men and one-fifth of women said that near misses behind the wheel were a result of distractions such as adjusting the radio and eating and drinking soft drinks.
