People should be more aware of the role of spinal cord injury in osteoporosis, scientists have said.
A report, published in journal Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, found that osteoporosis is common among spinal cord injury patients.
Each participant in the study used a wheel chair due to a paralyzing spinal injury. It was found that every patient had experienced a fracture following their spinal cord injury.
Authors concluded: "There is a clear future for a prospective study to evaluate the impact of targeted therapeutic education on risk factors for secondary fractures in patients with SCI."
In other news, individuals that suffer a spinal or brain injury due to a traffic accident are more likely to have chronic pain in the months following the incident, according to a study published in journal Arthritis Care and Research.
Researchers identified an 84 per cent increase in the risk of chronic pain in people who had experienced a traffic accident compared to those whose injury was the result of other events.
