Motorcycle helmets prevent spine injury, study concludes

Wearing a motorcycle helmet could significantly reduce the risk of a cervical spine injury in the event of an accident, a new study suggests.

Research by the John Hopkins University School of Medicine, published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, found that bikers who wear helmets are 22 per cent less likely to suffer such an injury than those who do not.

Although it is a legal requirement for motorcycle riders to wear helmets in the UK, the stipulation does not apply to all states in the US, where the study was carried out.

It also revealed that helmet wearers had a 65 per cent reduction in the risk of traumatic brain injury and 37 per cent lower risk of fatality.

The news comes after an analysis of spinal injury claims from the American Society of Anesthesiologists suggested that the majority of perioperative cervical spinal cord injuries do not result from traumatic injury but underlying disease.
