New spinal injury implant designed to encourage bone growth

A new porous metal implant given clearance for use in the US could help to treat spinal injury.

The TM-S Trabecular Metal system has been developed by Zimmer Holdings and is designed to support bone growth and vascularisation.

Researchers specifically designed the implant to treat the cervical spine of patients with degenerative disc disease.

Commenting on the approval of the device by the US Food and Drug Administration, Zimmer Spine president Steve Healy explained: "With the introduction of the TM-S system, Zimmer is bringing the potential benefits of porous metal technology to cervical interbody fusion.

"The osteoconductive properties of Trabecular Metal Technology support initial fixation and can potentially aid in cervical fusion."

Earlier this month, Laura Miller wrote in ASC Review that minimally invasive spinal injury treatments are getting more popular, as doctors become more confident in administering them.

She noted that minimally invasive procedures are associated with better recovery times and shorter hospital stays.
