Treatment of spinal injury using minimally invasive procedures is getting more popular among surgeons, who are becoming proficient at administering them, it has been claimed.
These kinds of procedures such as vertebroplasty, during which cement is injected into the spine through a small hole in the skin, are also becoming more popular beyond the spine - such as in the knee and shoulder joints.
Commenting on the growing trend among surgeons using these procedures, Millennium Research Group senior analyst Deanna Venkessel explained: "Minimally invasive surgery is something that has been discussed and is growing due to its advantages, such as less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times."
Recent research carried out at the University of California suggested that many primates are capable of significant natural recovery from spinal cord injury.
It is hoped that the finding could lead to the development of new treatments in the future for humans.
