A businessman has been fined after one of his employees suffered spinal injury when he fell off a ladder.
The employee had climbed a ladder to reach a mechanism at the commercial vehicle garage when the ladder slipped.
Michael Wilson of M Wilson Commercials was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,000 after an investigation into the incident showed that the ladder was cut off at the top, missing feet at both ends and had a damaged bottom rung.
Matt Lea, of the Health and Safety Executive, said that the employee had not received any training on working with ladders and that the ladder should have been checked in advance to ensure it was suitable.
"Sadly, this worker is just one of hundreds of people who are injured every year as a result of falling from ladders. Falling a short distance can still result in someone being seriously injured," he added.
This comes after a construction worker suffered severe spinal injury when he fell through the roof of a farm building.
