Worker suffers life-changing spinal injury after farm accident

A construction worker was left with severe brain and spinal injury when he fell through the roof of a farm building.

Richard Cooke, who was 26 at the time, suffered the injuries when the roof sheeting he was standing on collapsed and he fell six metres to the floor.

Mr Cooke, who was sub-contracting for Clive Pearce of CW Pearce at the time of the incident, is now an incomplete paraplegic and uses a wheelchair.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that no measures were put in place to prevent such an accident and the work could have in fact been completed without workers located on the roof of the building.

HSE inspector, Annette Walker, said: "The risks of working on or near fragile roofs are well known and the safety measures well established, but HSE continues to see tragic cases such as this where work is not suitably coordinated and planned to reduce risks."

This follows news that a TV jouster sustained fatal brain injury while participating in a warm up jousting match for Channel 4's Time Team.
