A cancer drug could improve recovery in spinal injury patients, doctors have found.
Research, published in Science Express, found that Taxol promotes regeneration of injured parts of the central nervous system nerve cells.
The drug has been seen to stabilise the microtubules while helping nerve cells to regrow as well as stopping an inhibitory substance from forming in the scar tissue.
Study researcher Frank Bradke, of the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology in Germany told MyHealthNewsDaily: "On the one hand, it basically gets these neurons to start to grow, like a crazy driver, and at the same time, it also reduces these stop signs, it reduces the scarring process."
This comes after a Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine study found that the use of multipotent adult progenitor cells could stop neuron retraction, reduce inflammation and promote re-growth of neurons in those with spinal injury.
