Teenager with spinal injury 'vows to walk again'

A 16-year-old girl with spinal injury has vowed to walk again, despite doctors telling her this is unlikely, a report says.

The Denver Post reports that Karina Vegas was shot in the back outside her high school in December when on the street talking with friends.

According to the teenager from Denver, a car containing several people passed and then did a U turn in an attempt to run the group over. Having failed, someone from inside the vehicle fired a shot into the crowd.

The newspaper reports that Vargas has told family and friends that she would walk again, adding: "I don't see myself like this in a wheelchair for the rest of my life."

This comes following news that congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who suffered severe brain injury after being shot in the head has been moved to a rehabilitation facility.

According to doctors, the success of her recovery depends on the degree of her injury along with the proficiency of her therapists.
