America's National Football League (NFL) Charities has awarded a Cornell University professor a $100,000 (£62,682) grant which will go towards spinal injury research, according to a report.
Many football players have been reported as suffering brain injury during games this season but Greater Binghamton's pressconnects.com reports that professor Larry Bonassar of the university will use the funding to look into spinal injury in the athletes.
"There are many, many sub-threshold injuries that take place during the course of a game," he told the news source.
"They are often written off by players, fans and organizations and won't manifest until after the player's career. Those are the kinds of injuries and situations we are trying to help with."
This comes after the NFL proposed measures to limit brain and spinal injury among players including a reduction in the number of offseason workouts to reduce hitting during practises as well as a possible 18-game regular season.
