A man with severe spinal injury has opened a rehabilitation centre in Regina, Canada to help those with spinal cord injury, according to a report.
Chris Lesanko is a former top Saskatchewan lacrosse player who was injured when one of his team mates had intended to throw him onto a waterbed for fun, but Lesanko ended up striking his head on the baseboard, reports the Leader Post.
This resulted in fractures to the fourth and fifth vertebrae in his neck and he now uses a wheelchair.
The 27-year-old Regina University student told the newspaper that while seeking treatment, he found Project Walk in California - an exercise and wellness program designed to help those with spinal cord injury.
However, the Canadian appreciates that the cost of travel is an issue for many with spinal cord injuries and so decided to open The First Steps Spinal Cord Injury Wellness Centre in Canada.
This comes after news that Ian Semmons, chair of Action on Pain has said that NHS health professionals should receive more training on how to help patients who experience chronic pain, such as those with a traumatic spinal injury.
