Healthcare professionals should receive more training on how to help patients who experience chronic pain, a campaign group has said, which could benefit spinal injury patients.
Ian Semmons, chair of Action on Pain, said some patients find it difficult to access effective treatment early enough, and there is little consistency across the NHS in terms of access to pain clinics and services.
"It is not just doctors; it is physios, it is nurses, it is occupational therapists and those who have access to people with chronic pain," he said.
"Pain management is less than one per cent of their initial training and that's not enough."
Recently, the Patients Association called for the government to establish a clear care pathway for chronic pain services in the NHS, as well as further education on the subject for healthcare professionals.
Around one-third of patients were found to be unsure of how to use their prescribed medication.
