Stem cell research designed to help those with conditions such as spinal cord injury reached new heights in the US during 2010, experts say.
Two US companies - Advanced Cell Technology and Geron Corp - got the go ahead to use embryonic stem cell treatment on those suffering from spinal cord injury and blindness.
The controversial treatment looks set to progress even further in the coming year as scientists refine their methods to get around people's anxieties about the cell harvesting.
Bob Lanza, chief scientist at Advanced Cell Technology, said that new experiments mark the beginning of a new era in the field.
"After a decade of intense controversy, the field is finally ready to start proving itself and to actually start helping patients suffering from a range of horrific diseases," he added.
Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Texas are to examine the utilisation of a child's own umbilical cord blood stem cell in the treatment of traumatic brain injury.
