Osteoporosis awareness 'poor among patients'

Patients may not be as well informed about the danger of spinal injury resulting from osteoporosis as they believe themselves to be.

Despite concerns about fractures, which could potentially damage the spinal cord, many patients do not adhere to their treatments, according to research by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).

Fewer than half of patients were found to still take their medication after a year of treatment, which has partly been attributed to sufferers underestimating their personal risk, perhaps of spinal injury.

Doctors are also guilty of underestimating patient concerns about fractures.

Commenting on the findings, IOF chief executive Patrice McKenney said: "As this survey revealed, patient and doctor misconceptions exist on a number of levels.

"Community-based online support programmes have a great potential to fill these information gaps."

However, recent research by the Loyola University Health System suggested that taking a break from osteoporosis drugs could actually be beneficial for bone health, particularly in the jaw and thigh bone.
