Disk replacement 'best treatment for spinal injury'

Disk replacement is the best way to cure spinal injury, according to one expert.

Dr Saurabh Singh of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) told, the Times of India that replacing the disk could provide a more durable cure for spinal injury.

This disk replacement using a transthoracic approach is being practised around the world by spinal surgeons, according to the assistant professor of orthopaedics.

"It provides satisfaction to the patients in the form of almost normal recovery of their neurological functions," he told the newspaper.

This surgery replaces a damaged lumbar disk with an artificial one that functions in a similar manner.

Meanwhile, scientists at National ICT Australia have developed a smart chip designed to measure and prevent pain signals from getting to the brain.

The device, which is soon to be tested on humans, is able to measure the properties of nerves transferring pain signals to the brain and blocks these with 10-volt electric pulses.
