Eric LeGrand has given his first interview since he sustained severe spinal injury during a football game for Rutgers University in October.
The player told ESPN's SportsCenter on Friday than he believes he will walk again, despite being paralysed after making a headfirst tackle.
He told the show's Tom Rinaldi: "God has a plan for me and I know it's not to be sitting here all the time. I know he has something planned bigger for me."
Currently, LeGrand has no voluntary movement below his fracture point at the C3/C4 vertabrae although he reported he could move his body six days after surgery and is now experiencing sensation throughout his body.
LeGrand's case, along with those of several other sportsmen suffering brain and spinal injury, has prompted the US' NFL to crack down on illegal tackles in American Football.
It intends to up punishments for severe tackles, including suspending players without pay for illegal tackles to opponents' heads.
