The state government of New South Wales, Australia, has announced it will be putting A$2.5 million (£3.3 million) into spinal cord injury research.
This money is part of the government's Spinal Cord Injury and Related Neurological Conditions Research Grants Program, which began in 2003 after Superman star and spinal injury sufferer Christopher Reeve visited Sydney.
Chief executive officer of the Spinal Cord Injury Network Dr Stephanie Williams applauded the decision.
"SCIN will work with the NSW government to grow our research and development capacity, including furthering collaboration between states and territories," she said.
The funding will be also be used to fund research that will have an effect on many other conditions, including Motor Neurone Disease.
Meanwhile, scientists at National ICT Australia have developed a smart chip designed to measure and stop pain signals from the brain, which could massively improve the quality of life of those suffering from spinal injury.
