A Wirral paper factory assistant winder has suffered a spinal injury after being crushed by a two-tonne reel of paper.
Christopher John Shaw has been left paralysed from the chest down following a spinal cord injury after being crushed by the reel in July 2007 at the North Wales SCA Hygiene Products site.
The 38-year-old was using his body weight to slow down the reel when he slipped, resulting in him falling under the moving object.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Will Gretton explained that using body weight to slow down a reel clearly is not a safe way of working.
He added: "The consequences of this incident could have been even more serious.
"The company has now put into place more effective measures to protect the health and safety of their employees, unfortunately too late for Mr Shaw."
Last month, London based waste management frim McGrath Bros was prosecuted after an employee's legs were crushed between two metal frames while unloading a truck.
