A US man who suffered a spinal injury 17 years ago has started a business optimising mobility vehicles to suit specific people's needs.
Robert Sullivan uses his own experience of coping with his disability to help others to improve their lives, through technical improvements to their wheelchairs and mobility scooters, reports the Superior Telegram.
Mr Sullivan also offers advice on how those with or spinal cord injury or other disabilities can make home improvements to make their lives easier.
He told the newspaper: "When I am at a customer’s home I can make suggestions as to how to make the house better for them.
"For instance, you can only buy very large ramps so I buy steel in Duluth for the material, then bring it to a fabricators where they cut it to my measurements."
In addition to material improvements to their environment to assist people with spinal injuries, scientists from Gothenburg University believe that they could soon grow vertebral discs using stem cells to correct spinal cord damage.
Researchers have successfully grown stem cells which they believe could help damaged discs regenerate.
