German TV contestant suffers spinal injury on air

A contestant on one of Germany's popular prime time television shows suffered a spinal injury live this weekend, when he attempted to leap over a moving car.

Samuel Koch attempted the stunt on the ZDF channel show You Want a Bet?, which boasts an audience of around ten million viewers, while wearing spring-loaded stilts.

According to AFP, the show's host, Thomas Gottschalk, defended the stunt in an interview on a late night news programme.

He said: "In 29 years we have had lots of dangerous bets, young people climbing up walls and one young man who jumped over a house on a skateboard, and the worst we have ever had is a broken leg."

The number of cyclists suffering from spinal cord injury as a result of accidents on British roads is rising, new figures show.

Statistics from the Department for Transport indicate that nearly 15,000 cyclists injured on UK roads suffered from serious injuries between June 2009 and June 2010.
