A former NFL player in the US has claimed that the league denied him permanent disability payments for his spinal injury.
Eric Shelton, a one-time player for the Washington Redskins, was diagnosed with axial loading injury following a helmet-to-helmet hit in 2008, which effectively ended his career.
However, Mr Shelton claims that the NFL disability plans have not paid out in full for "total and permanently disabled" coverage, even though four physicians have agreed that his spinal injury was a result of playing football.
"The NFL is talking about the danger of helmet-to-helmet hits and levying fines against players," the athlete's lawyer Cyril Smith told Fox News.
"But when they have to compensate disabled players, it is a different story."
It follows reports in the Las Vegas Sun that a spinal injury to American football player LaQuan Phillps, also suffered in 2008, has led to a legal case questioning the insurance cover provided by his school.
