Doctors may have prevented a British girl with cerebral palsy from suffering spinal injury as her body grows.
Francesca Vismara's mother Lorena told the Daily Express how concerned she was about how the condition would affect her daughter in later life.
A pump has been surgically implanted into Francesca's stomach, which administers muscle relaxant drugs directly into the spinal fluid.
Ms Vismara told the newspaper: "We've noticed so many improvements. For the first time she is sleeping through the night and her hand movement is dramatically better.
"She can feed herself and her writing is much clearer."
Meanwhile in August, researchers discovered that human neural stem cells could be used to reverse long-term hind-limb paralysis by correcting chronic spinal cord injury.
The scientists from the University of California Irvine indicated that using human stem cells restored mobility among mice with spinal injuries, when inflammation was agreed to have stabilised and "reached a plateau".
