The largest stem cell research unit in the US, which will focus on conditions such as spinal cord injury, cancer and cardio problems, is to open at Stanford University on October 27th.
Five hundred and fifty researchers will be housed in the centre's 33 laboratories to allow for a wide range of stem cell projects.
In order to research how conditions such as spinal injury can be improved, the work will be supported by state-of-the-art technology including the latest in imaging, advanced genome sequencing machinery, a microfluidics laboratory and a cancer tissue bank to speed up analysis.

The building was partly funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine as well as Stanford president John Hennessy, medical school dean Philip Pizzo, Lorry Lokey business wire founder.
This comes shortly after pioneering new work began on the first spinal injury patient to be treated with human embryonic stem cells, showing that this area of research could be very valuable for spinal injury patients.
