A business deal looks set to further the development of cartilage regeneration aimed at spinal injury patients.
Arrowhead's Nanotope Inc, a California-based medical research organisation, has made a deal with Smith & Nephew to advance cartilage regeneration products which could lead to new therapies for spinal cord injury patients.
Smith & Nephew, which specialises in orthopaedics and sports medicine, plans to conduct the preclinical trials and assume all associated costs as well as to market the product.
Nanotope is developing products to regenerate specific tissues including neuronal, vascular, bone and myocardial, and could gain $26.6 million (£16.8 million) from this, according to Arrowhead.
Mark Augusti, President of Smith & Nephew's Biologics and Spine Business unit, said: "We are always searching for alliances with businesses whose technologies address the major unmet needs of our market. Cartilage repair is a clear area of interest to us and we are very pleased to be partnering with Nanotope in this area."
This news comes after reports this week of the first ever stem cell treatment for spinal injury, giving hope to sufferers of the condition.
