A new airbag system for horse riders designed to reduce the chances of a spinal injury in an accident could potentially be used by motorcyclists.
The Point Two jacket contains an airbag that deploys on impact and has been developed by the Transport Research Laboratory.
Initially designed for horse riders, it is hoped the technology will cut serious spinal cord injury rates among motorcyclists as well.
Matthew Dixon of spinal injury claim solicitors Serious Law said the only protection for bikers available until now was Kevlar running down the back of a jacket.
"If something similar to an airbag can be deployed without causing any further injury to the rider, this could be a viable piece of safety equipment and one that, if it is effective, could prevent motorcyclists from suffering some serious injuries," he added.
The deaths of several bikers on roads in Yorkshire recently prompted a warning from local police to ride more safely.
