A 17-year-old high school American footballer has suffered a severe spinal cord injury on the field of play.
Molina High School senior Diondre Preston was injured in a head-to-head collision with an opponent just before the match was due to finish.
After being stabilised on the pitch, Preston was taken to Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where he underwent surgery on his spine.
The incident occurred almost exactly one year after another footballer was paralysed from the waist down in an accident on the same pitch.
Preston's coach Charles DeVille told the Dallas Morning News: "The surgery was done to relieve pressure and find out what kind of damage we're looking at and to see what the next step will be.
"More than two vertebrae are damaged, but we won't know for a few days the extent of the injury, and he'll be in ICU for a while."
The news comes as the US Congress debates a bill on reducing brain injuries among school-age children.
