A Canadian diver who suffered a spinal injury that would leave most patients paralysed, was walking unaided just weeks after his accident, reported the Ottawa Citizen.
Steven Dionne, a 25-year-old ex-paramedic had been diving at night with friends when he fractured his C4 vertebra, an injury that normally paralyses patients from the elbows down.
Just one week after the incident, however, he was walking unaided, to the amazement of medical professionals and himself, it was reported.
Spinal cord injury specialist Dr Eugene Kenneth Wai, who operated on Mr Dionne, explained that the speed of his recovery is far from normal.
"Most people get some improvement, usually not a lot. A lot of them are still paralysed, or they get some movement back, but aren’t functional," he told the newspaper.
His story of triumphing over a spinal injury echoes that of Hawaii teenager Darren Choi, who is beginning to walk unaided two months after a spinal cord injury left him paralysed.
