Could cannabis relieve pain for spinal injury patients?

Spinal injury patients who suffer chronic pain may benefit from smoking cannabis, new research reveals.

A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that mild doses of cannabis taken regularly could reduce the intensity of symptoms and improve sleep in patients who suffer long-term pain.

The patients were found to tolerate such levels well and the researchers are looking at long-term safety and efficacy studies.

Action on Pain, a charity, said that cannabis can be helpful as long as it is carefully controlled and not harmful.

Ian Semmons, chairman of the charity, said they support ongoing trials and research into such treatments.

"It has been on the radar for maybe six, seven years now and we stutter towards it. There does seem to be a slight increase in the acceptance of that treatment but it is still a long way off [from] getting the all-clear in the UK," he explained.
