Spinal cord injury sees firm fined £30k

A Doncaster firm has been fined after one of its workers suffered a spinal cord injury that has left him paralysed from the chest down.

Anton Burrows was crushed by a 660-pound steel beam while working for Strata Homes Yorkshire last year and is now quadriplegic.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) brought the prosecution against the firm, claiming that it had not employed proper safety precautions for the lifting of heavy equipment.

"Had the lifting operation been properly planned and supervised, in line with the regulations, the Approved Code of Practice and HSE's guidance, this devastating incident which could have very easily killed someone, would have been avoided," explained HSE inspector Alasdair Green.

In addition to a £30,000 fine, the company was ordered to pay over £16,000 in costs.

The news comes after two UK construction companies were fined a total of £125,000 after a worker fell 21 metres.
