A US soldier has successfully overcome a spinal injury that prevented her from participating in any activities.
Army Staff Sergeant Dani Ventre has managed to incorporate organised fitness training at her brigade's headquarter battery into her long-term recovery strategy.
She told the American Forces Press Service: "I have been on and off a 'dead man's' profile for six years, which doesn't allow me to participate in any organised physical fitness training.
"I realise that the physical fitness sessions will help me recover and not be on profile any longer."
A recent report published by Arrowhead suggested that traumatic brain injury (TBI) is emerging as the leading cause of central nervous system impairment, ahead of spinal cord injury.
The report pointed to statistics from the US National Centers for Disease Control, suggesting that this figure may be rising owing to the high proportion of soldiers returning from combat with TBI.
