A spinal injury sustained by a high school American football player in the US may have resulted from poor technique, according to experts.
Nashua North High School's Cooper Doucette is believed to have broken his neck because he led with his head when completing a routine tackling drill, reports the Nashua Telegraph.
Speaking to the newspaper having reviewed the incident, superintendent Mark Conrad explained that it appears the youngster came in for the tackle in the wrong position, which is likely to have caused the spinal cord injury.
He added: "I don't think there was anything we could have done to prevent that.
"Our initial assessment is our coaching practices are sound."
Research published earlier this week by researchers at Boston University suggested that sports-related brain trauma may cause a disease with similar symptoms to a form of motor neurone disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
The researchers at the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy added that the condition affects the ability of the sufferer to control voluntary muscle movements.
