U2 front man Bono is back performing after recovering from a spinal injury two months ago.
The singer performed in Turin as the band restarted their world tour following the injury he sustained while practising in for a concert in Germany.
He thanked fans for all their messages of support and described the band as a family, with him the "prodigal son" returning.
Bono was sent to a specialist centre in Munich after the injury, where he was treated by two leading German neuroscientists.
Paul McGuiness, the band's manager, told Reuters that Bono did a lot of training and hard work to recover his fitness.
"The doctors are very confident. They certified him fit to perform. It's really a very short time for a spinal injury," he added.
U2 had been forced to cancel several concerts and reschedule performances in America for next year.
Speaking last month, Bono credited his recovery to a bit of "German engineering" and said the injury "was quite serious".
