Spinal injury foundation advises on how to stay safe this summer

A leading spinal injury foundation is offering advice on how to stay safe this summer and avoid potentially life-changing accidents.

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, one the most prominent US spinal injury charities, has come up with a summer safety checklist in an effort to prevent more people becoming paralysed.

According to a recent study commissioned by the foundation, there are over 200,000 people in the US living with spinal cord injuries caused by sporting and recreational activities.

Among some of the measures prescribed, the charity warns cyclists that they should always wear a crash helmet and to replace it every three to five years.

In addition, people should not dive into less than nine ft of water and should never swim or engage in water-related activities after drinking alcohol.

The charity recently broke the world record for the most wheelchairs in a moving line at an event in Los Angeles.
