Diving into pools can be a major cause of spinal injuries, it has been claimed.
According to Spinal Cord Society president Gary Wood, diving into shallow water and garden pools can be very dangerous and people should be more careful.
Writing for the Times Union, he says that diving into water is riskier than people think as people underestimate the speed and distance that human bodies travel through water.
The figures seem to back up what he is saying, with 300 out of 800 diving accidents resulting in paralysis occurring in shallow water.
"We encourage parents to teach their children and young friends not to dive into backyard pools, and the resulting dangers of such activity," he warned.
Diving is the single biggest cause of sport-related spinal cord injury, he adds.
The issue of spinal injury in sport was recently highlighted with the case of Scotland rugby ace Thom Evans, who has been forced to retire after suffering damage to his spine.
