A dog in India has recovered from a spinal cord injury after being treated using stem cell technology.
Rambo, a nine-month-old boxer injured in a car accident, is now walking and running after becoming the first animal to be successfully treated with stem cell therapy.
Stem cells were taken from Rambo's own bone marrow and then grown at a centre in Chennai.
These stem cells were then grafted onto the dog's spine by vets at the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Tanuvas).
They had previously tried the operation on another dog that had suffered a spinal injury, though it died soon after.
"This is a preliminary case we are projecting. The dog recovered within one or two months of the procedure being performed. More studies will be conducted," Tanuvas vice-chancellor Dr P Thangaraju told the Times of India.
The news comes after scientists in the US made a potential breakthrough in stem cell research after looking at the difference between human induced pluripotent stem cells and human embryonic stem cells.
